Artificial intelligence is almost always presented as the “defining technological breakthrough” of the 21st century, yet some of the very people responsible for creating it are warning the world about its consequences.
Geoffrey Hinton’s (The Godfather of AI) warning on the direction of AI.
“Unfortunately, the rapid progress in AI comes with many short-term risks. It has already created divisive echo-chambers by offering people content that makes them indignant. It is already being used by authoritarian governments for massive surveillance and by cyber criminals for phishing attacks. In the near future AI may be used to create terrible new viruses and horrendous lethal weapons that decide by themselves who to kill or maim. All of these short-term risks require urgent and forceful attention from governments and international organizations.” (Hinton’s speech at the Nobel Prize banquet; 2024).
The fact that Hinton is issuing a warning to the world speaks to the generational seriousness of the situation. While he highlights AI’s potential to dramatically increase productivity, model human intuition, and create highly intelligent assistants in all industries, its development simultaneously introduces risks–including surveillance, automated weapons and manipulation– that cannot be ignored.
Equally alarming is the apparent prioritization of profit over safety by many companies developing these systems, simultaneously overlooking and downplaying extreme ethical and societal risks. If governments and international organizations fail to act upon such warnings, the responsibility falls on researchers, educators, and ordinary citizens to take responsibility.
Unprecedented Rapidness of Generative AI Adoption
When technologies reshape society, they do so gradually. Generative AI has not followed that pattern: tools such as ChatGPT and equivalent are now nearly ubiquitous for researching, writing, communication and everything in between. ChatGPT debuted in November 2022 and was drawing hundreds of millions of users each month by early 2024. Surveys now show that around 40% of U.S. adults between ages 18-64 have taken advantage of a generative AI tool, with a third of those people using it at least once in the prior week. In fact, researchers report that the adoption of AI has been as rapid as the adoption of personal computers in the 1980s, and much faster than the internet itself. While the convenience and productivity boosts are undeniable, the ethical, social, and behavioral risks remain comparatively underexamined and overlooked.
These AI tools reach into nearly every corner of society, yet their effects are far from evenly distributed. The uneven impacts that surround the usage of generative AI leaves several unsolved issues across education, professional industries and everyday work. Universities, for example, are reporting heavy rises in AI created academic dishonesty. One survey of academic integrity violations documented almost 7,000 proven cases of cheating using AI tools during their 2023-24 academic year, equivalent to 5.1 for every 1000 students, according to The Guardian, 2025. At the same time, studies suggest that the real scale of AI use in academic settings is far greater than formal cases reveal alone. A 2024 survey conducted by the MIT Technology Review found nearly 55% of students worldwide reporting their, often undisclosed, use of generative AI tools for assignments or research.
Beyond universities, the rapid adoption of AI has also reshaped the professional and creative industries at unprecedented paces. A 2024 report from the National Bureau of Economic research found that over 40% of knowledge workers in fields such as content creation, research, and marketing reported integrating AI tools into their daily workflows.

These trends raise an obvious question: why does this matter? The concern is not simply that AI is widely used, obviously. The deeper concern is how AI is reshaping the way people think and interact with the world–in general. As people embed AI into their different everyday tasks, from replacing google searches, to creating their schedules, people are beginning to rely on AI not merely as a tool, but as extensions of their own cognitive processes. The growing dependency on AI raises a deeper issue: What happens to literal human thinking when AI begins to outperform the intellectual work once carried out by real people?
Cognitive Atrophy & Emotional Substitution
The risk of cognitive atrophy is one of the most subtle, yet profound consequences of widespread AI adoption. Technology has many times altered the way humans process information throughout history, but AI represents a far more direct shift. Instead of simply assisting with calculations or data retrievement, AI can generate ideas, summarize incredibly complex concepts and instantly produce fully developed responses to any question. While this dramatically increases efficiency, it also reduces the amount of cognitive effort required from a user. Over time, the repeated use of generative AI will weaken critical skills that people once exercised independently.
Alongside this risk, another transformation is beginning to emerge: emotional substitution. AI systems are becoming increasingly sophisticated, being able to empathize with a user, offer advice and maintain an extended dialogue with them. As a result, some individuals begin to treat these systems as companions, and form an emotional connection with them.
While these interactions may seem harmless on the surface, they could lead to users getting into parasocial relationships–one sided, non reciprocal bonds, where a person invests emotional energy in a figure that is unaware of their existence. Generative AI introduces a new dynamic to this dynamic. Instant responses, personalized interactions and what seems to be a reliable “person” to talk to can make the relationship feel interactive and reciprocal. The responsiveness can create the illusion of a genuine companion, even though AI does not possess emotions. (yet). Examples of this phenomenon are already emerging. AI companion platforms such as Replika allow users to maintain ongoing conversations with a personalized digital partner designed to provide emotional support. Some users report making deep connections and attachments to these systems, with some even treating them as romantic partners. This could potentially alter how individuals develop real relationships and process genuine human emotional experiences and interactions.
Together, the risks of cognitive atrophy and emotional substitution illustrate a significant but quiet consequence of generative AI. The convenience is shifting how people work, learn, connect and relate to others. If these patterns continue to expand unchecked, the impact will not be measured in technological processes, but in changes to human cognition.
