Introduction
A 2025 Gallup poll found that over 65% of US Democrats had a ‘positive image of socialism’ opposed to the Independents who had a modest preference for capitalism, and Republicans that had an overwhelmingly positive view of capitalism.
Why have Democrat voters seen a 10 point jump in this positive view of socialism since 2010?
The answer is rooted in the progressive wing of the Democratic party; and surprisingly, also in the MAGA movement of the past decade.
The Democratic Socialists:
Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, Bernie Sanders and Zohran Mamdani are three well known democratic socialists in politics who have greatly popularised the idea and term.
They have used emotionally charged appeals, internet platforms and publicised authenticity to spread their views on democratic socialism. This appeals greatly to their Democrat base, and largely urban constituents.
What is Democratic Socialism?
Democratic socialism formally refers to social ownership and democratic operation of the means of production. However, in the world of buzzwords, people do not always use the term in line with its formal definition.
The idea of democratic socialism as shown by these politicians refers to:
- A capitalist system receptive to social needs and demands.
- Reduced wealth inequalities.
- An increase in social programs to benefit the economically weaker sections of society.
So then, this new faction of Democrats aren’t really socialists. But they most certainly aren’t too keen about the status quo either.
Why Democratic Socialism?
The Trump administration formed an anti-immigration and pro-reactionary government, frequently adopting ideas that would have been considered shocking in recent eras.
However, the very genius of the MAGA faction of the Republican party lies in the big-tent populism it created.
Democratic socialism might be a similar response to uncertainty, but it does not blame migrants and cultural minorities. It is rather, heavily critical of the wealthy minority.
Thus, distrust in government institutions and growing inflation has brought many Americans to disillusion with the way things are, democratic socialism offers a more left wing approach to dealing with the dissatisfaction of the current systems— not unlike how the MAGA movement took advantage of the fear of job losses to immigrants, to promote anti-immigration ideologies.
What to Expect Now:
After years of populist right wing influence across American politics, democratic socialism could be the perfect outsider centre-left response to the MAGA movement.
Furthermore, as more and more politicians jump onto the label, a leftward drag to the Overton window might form and possibly a more left wing federal government.
Till then, the democratic socialists can just hope that the grassroots outsider movement grows to be something bigger than it is now, and that the ideologies, do not become just another labelled box of ideas with no outcomes.
